Man Injured in Downtown Train Crash

One man was injured and taken to Atlanta Medical after apparently attempting to drive around the warning signal cross bar and over the train tracks in downtown Douglasville this morning.

One man was injured and taken to Atlanta Medical after apparently attempting to drive around the warning signal cross bar and over the train tracks in downtown Douglasville this morning, according to Capt. D. Shaw, Douglasville Police Department.

The man had no visible injuries but was complaining about his left leg, Shaw said. The train appeared to be undamaged.

With the railroad crossing bar sticking out of the man's truck and a deep gouge in the street, the preliminary investigation indicates he attempted to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid the cross bar got his truck caught. Investigating Officer Justin Pollard and Shaw agreed.

After the train stuck the truck, "The man got out of the truck and was walking and talking," Shaw said. "I was told a citizen helped by bending the truck door to get him out."

The accident occurred at the Brown Street Crossing which will be closed until the railroad can repair the signal. Officials do not expect the accident to interfere with traffic on Bankhead Highway.
