Infant in I-75 Wreck Dies; Truck Driver Charged

The 6-month-old was the child of a Douglasville couple injured in a four-vehicle crash late Saturday in Cobb County.

The 6-month-old child of a Douglasville couple injured in a multivehicle accident on Interstate 75 in Cobb County on Saturday night has died. 

The child, whose name was not released, died Monday afternoon at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Scottish Rite hospital in Sandy Springs, according to Cobb police. 

Cobb police also said that Henry Lipps, 59, of New Albany, IN, who was driving a tractor-trailer that caused the accident, has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and following too closely.

He turned himself into the Cobb police Precinct 1 on Monday night and was released on a $1,300 bond, according to police. 

Police investigators said Lipps did not brake when he approached stalled traffic on a southbound lane of I-75 north of the Windy Hill Road exit Exit 260. His 18-wheeler crashed into the back of a car in which the child and two adults, Donald Morgan, 25, and Candice Morgan, 24, were riding.

The child was taken to Scottish Rite with critical injuries while its parents were taken to Atlanta Medical Center. Two other adults riding in another car, Ramon Mcelrathbey, 24, and Cornelius Mcelrathbey, 21, were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. 

Two other adults in another car impacted by the crash were not injured, nor was Lipps.
