High-Speed Chase Ends in Fiery Crash

Lucky to be alive, Kevin Montgomery only sustained minor head injures and will be arrested as soon as he is released from the hospital.

Kevin Montgomery, of Villa Rica, led a deputy on a high-speed chase at approximately 1 a.m. that ended in a fiery crash in the woods off of Old National Highway, in Fulton County. The chase began when the deputy found Montgomery driving in the wrong lane on Highway 166, according to Deputy Chief Stan Copeland.

"He was driving on the wrong side and almost hit the deputy," he said.

The deputy attempted to pull the car over for suspected DUI and Montgomery began to flee. After at least a seven or eight mile chase, Montgomery's vehicle left the road and went into the woods, catching fire.

The deputy managed to keep the fire at bay with fire extinguishers but was unable to immediately get Montgomery out of the vehicle. Firemen from the Fulton County Fire Department were finally able to remove him from the vehicle.

Montgomery sustained only minor head injuries and was taken to the hospital for observation.

"He's extremely lucky to be alive," Copeland said. "He could have easily died in the wreck."

Montgomery will be arrested as soon as he is released from the hospital, Copeland said.

Montgomery will face charges of DUI, attempting to elude police, driving with a suspended license and several traffic charges.

Copeland said the vehicle is registered to a woman who lives in Villa Rica and police are checking to see if the vehicle was stolen.
