Gotcha! Squatter Goes to Jail

Roderick Walker is being booked into the on charges of criminal trespass and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and may face additional charges, Sheriff Phil Miller said tonight.

Walker appeared on WSB-TV Wednesday night, explaining his use of the law of adverse possession to move into an abandoned Douglasville three-bedroom, 2½-bathroom house on Mackenzie Court; the house once was valued at almost $300,000. Walker also told how he counsels others to claim vacant houses as their own.

"I saw the story on (Douglasville) Patch this morning, and I made it a priority to make sure we were doing what we are supposed to be doing," Miller said. "I don't want people to think they're going to come to Douglas County and try something like this. This is not the place to do that."

Miller said the investigation is continuing and, although he could not go into more detail, other charges could come.

"It looks like he's going to be spending Christmas in jail," the sheriff said.
