Douglas Sheriff's Office Posts Warning on Mail Scams

The letter promises big winnings, but you have to pay the taxes first.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office posted a Scam Alert this week on mail notifications claiming the recipients have won money in the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. But in order to collect the winnings, the letter says upfront money is needed to cover taxes.

“Unfortunately, we see that it is generally older citizens who are being taken advantage of by these unknown individuals,” the shriff’s office posted on its Facebook page. “Please pass the word along to anyone you know, especially older individuals, that this is a scam! There is no prize out there that should ever require someone to first send money of their own.”
