Douglas County Man Fatally Hit by Car After Florida Crash

A Villa Rica man was struck and killed at the site of a Florida traffic accident. He died on his son's 18th birthday.

A Douglas County man on a trip to Florida with his family climbed out of his pickup Sunday when they were involved in an accident, only to be fatally struck by another vehicle as his family helplessly watched, report the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

John W. Jenkins, 58, of Villa Rica, was taken to the hospital, where he died, according to police. It was his son's 18th birthday.

Jenkins and his family were returning from a weekend trip to Broward County Florida at the time of the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver who struck Jenkins stopped at the scene, police said. But the driver involved in the first wreck with Jenkins left the scene.

The Jenkins family made the weekend trip to visit a sick relative and was headed home at the time of the crash, the Sun Sentinel newspaper in Fort Lauderdale reported.

“I was on the phone with the 911 operator, had just stepped away from my husband when I hear my son screaming, ‘Dad, Dad,’” Shirley Jenkins told the newspaper. “I said, ‘Oh, my God, someone just killed my husband.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
