1 Child Dead, 5 Injured in I-20 Crash

According to an eyewitness account, the Lincoln Navigator, driven by Lauresia Woods, appeared to overshoot the exit and overcorrected.

A seven-year-old child died on the scene and four other children and an adult were injured in a one-car rollover accident Friday night that occurred on Interstate 20 west at the Fairburn Road exit, according to Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack.

Womack said that according to an eyewitness account, the Lincoln Navigator, driven by Lauresia Woods, appeared to overshoot the exit and overcorrected. Having exited the interstate, she then overcorrected again, rolling the vehicle over approximately six times, hitting the guard rail and rolling over it.

Four to six occupants were ejected from the vehicle, Womack said. The injuries included: Chelsey Woods, 13, taken to Scottish Rite Hospital in critical condition; Jasmine Lewis, 6, taken to Egleston Hospital in critical condition; Alize Woods, 15, taken to Egleston Hospital in good condition; Chateril Lewis, 15 transported but condition and location unknown at this time.

The adult driver, Lauresia Woods, was taken to the Atlanta Medical Center with minor injuries. Woods, a family relative to the children, was transporting the children to another relative's house when the accident happened.

The 911 call arrived at 10:14 p.m. and an officer was on the scene at 10:15 p.m.

"It's the most horrific single car accident I've ever seen," Womack said. "It looked like a plane accident. Debris was scattered over about a 65-yard area."
