Navy Vet, Bobby Charles 'Charlie' Williams Dies

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted today at 1 p.m. from Union Grove Baptist Church, 6517 Union Grove Road, Lithia Springs, with Pastor Kenneth Hennesy officiating.

Bobby Charles “Charlie” Williams, age 73 of Douglasville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, at . He was born Jan. 3, 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia the son of the late Elizah Williams and the late Mary Lynn Wesley Williams.

He attended Lena Cox Elementary School in Atlanta and was a graduate of West Fulton High School. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy on the USS Saratoga and served in the Navy Reserves. He retired from the United States Postal Service Special Delivery. He was a member of in Lithia Springs where he served as librarian for several years.

He loved his community and served as a volunteer at Beulah Elementary School for more than 30 years. In 1998, he was the recipient of the Amanda Hyatt Volunteer of the Year Award from the . He was a heart transplant recipient more than 13 years ago at St. Joseph’s Hospital and he fought the good fight throughout his journey.

Charlie Williams was known as “BC” by his colleagues with the United States Postal Service in Atlanta, by Bobby by his friends at Pep Boys, “Mr. Charlie” by those that loved him at Beulah Elementary School, and “PawPaw” by his four grandsons.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle and was loved by all that knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and A.J. Morris; nephews, David Morris; mother-in-law, Doris Hord; brother-in-law, Marvin Baxter; and sister-in-law, Ann Williams.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Sue Hord Williams of Douglasville; one daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi and Adrian Teal of Douglasville; one son, Brent Williams of Douglasville; four grandsons, Austin, Adam, Ayden and Alex; sisters and brother-in-law, Dot Baxter of Powder Springs and Betty and Jimmy Duke of Smyrna; brother, Harold Williams; father-in-law, Shelby Hord of Marietta;  brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Kathy and Ron Dorminy of Marietta, Kim and Terry Holtzclaw of Canton, Shelly and Stefan Wethmar of Muenster, Germany; Steve and Karen Hord of Marietta, and Hap and Diane Hord of Powder Springs; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family received friends at , Douglas Chapel, Monday, Aug. 6. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted today at 1 p.m. from Union Grove Baptist Church, 6517 Union Grove Road, Lithia Springs, with Pastor Kenneth Hennesy officiating.

Interment will follow at Union Grove Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Those desiring to do so may make memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Williams to Union Grove Baptist Church, 6517 Union Grove Road, Lithia Springs,Georgia 30122.
