2009 AHS Honor Grad Zachary Daniel Cowart, 23, Dies

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Zachary Daniel Cowart, 23 of Douglasville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, in Athens. Zachary was born Dec. 21, 1990.  Zachary was a 2009 honor graduate from Alexander High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science from the University of Georgia in May 2013. Zachary was a first year student in the University Of Georgia College Of Veterinary Medicine. He received many accolades while at UGA including the Blue Key Honor Society, Agriculture Honor Society and Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.

Zachary was preceded in death by both grandfathers, Ford Yates of Roopville, GA and Eugene Cowart of Carrollton, GA.

Zachary is survived by his parents, Dan and Syble Cowart of Douglasville; sister, Kelli Chastain; brother-in-law, Matthew; niece, Evie Chastain of Panama City Beach Florida; grandparents,  Audrey Cowart of Carrollton and Frances Yates of Roopville, Georgia; uncles and aunts, J.E. Cowart of Carrollton, Dennis and Angela Cowart of Bremen, Phil and Elaine Jackson of Trussville, AL, Tim and Vicki Cowart of Carrollton, Susan Evans of Lithia Springs, Gwynn and Becky Yates of Roopville and Ken and Sue Entrekin of Roswell; and numerous cousins. He truly enjoyed getting together at family gatherings.

Zachary loved outdoor adventures. He played baseball at Alexander High School and was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. His many activities include helping his Dad on many home improvement construction projects, working at the UGA Dairy Farm in Athens, River Raft guide at the Ocoee River, hunting, fishing, and traveling with family.

Most importantly, Zachary put his trust in Jesus Christ in life and being absent from the body means he is present with the Lord. Zachary was a member of Central Baptist Church of Douglasville and attended Athens Church in Athens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Rosehaven Chapel with Reverend Steve McFall and Reverend Charles Gibbs officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehaven Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Zachary’s memory to Central Baptist Church Youth Department, 5811 Central Church Road, Douglasville, GA 30135.
