Setting Boundaries

Oneness, a controversial marriage tool.  I decided to write about this marriage tool after I received a question from a future husband. The question was,” should my future father in law get access to our bank account?  I did not say yes or no. After several discussions, the future husband decided with his future wife access to their bank account was not a good idea.

When a couple gets married, they are two individuals committing to be one. It is possible to reach oneness with your spouse, but it requires intentionality.

 Two people, with distinctive thoughts, attitudes, beliefs system and upbringing are working to be one while maintaining their individuality.

In order for a couple to establish that oneness, they have to set boundaries with family members.

Setting boundaries do not mean you are disrespecting your parents. Actually, you are honoring your parents. Here are five tips to build boundaries with family while merging as one.

1.     Address your family with respect – Approach your family with respect, this act of humility will break most defensive attitude.

2.     Speak as a unit – Do not throw each other under the bus. Once you make a decision as a couple, support each other.

3.     Point out great things that you have learned from your parents - Your parents taught you to be responsible and make your own decisions. Your parents want you to be a responsible adult. This is the time to applaud them for that.

4.     Thank them for listening and respecting your boundaries – Most parents have an innate fear of losing you as the baby boy or the baby girl. Reassure your parents of your love, and thank them for resopecting your boundaries.

5.     Be each other support system – There are times you will face resistant. Be each other support. If you feel like giving in to demands, speak with your spouse.

Remember you are one. Your parents will always have their roles in your life, but once you are married, you cleave to your spouse
