The Christmas Bench

A short story about making the most out of what you have. Holidays don't have to be stressful. Relax and enjoy them!

The Christmas Bench

Written by Lynn Hubbard (based on a true story told by Wendy Jackson)

Wendy sat wrapped in a throw as she sat next to the window. The world outside was kissed in frost; snow would come soon. Sadly she watched the cars driving by with Christmas trees strapped to their hoods. She could just imagine the green firs covered in lights and ornaments; their boughs guarding the presents underneath from peeking eyes.

Looking around at her own tree barren home she stood with a sigh and went to make some hot chocolate. Time was just flying by, the holidays were practically here and with her families busy schedule it was just impossible to get everything done.

Taking a sip from the warm brew she made her way back to her favorite reading spot. She stopped and looked sadly at the wooden bench where her tree should have been. A throw was haphazardly thrown upon it. The fabric made her think of The Lords humble beginnings as he was wrapped in a cloth and laid in a manger.

Christmas is not about trees and decorations. Wendy was grateful for what she did have: her family and a warm house. Looking around her home she spied a gift she had received earlier, it was still sitting on the kitchen table. Inspired, she took it and placed it under the bench. Gathering what decorations she had brought out she decorated the bench in reds, golds and greens. It was just as good as any Christmas Tree.

So the legend of the Christmas Bench was born.

Merry Christmas!
