Troops to get 5,000 Care Packages

As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wind down, a group of volunteers in the Soldiers’ Angels group, based in Douglasville, is working to make sure troops stationed in the war zones have a wonderful holiday season in spite of being thousands of miles from family and friends.

On Saturday, at 8:15 a.m., volunteers will meet at 7085 Highway 78 in Winston,  at the Assured Comfort Heating & Air warehouse, to pack up to 5,000 care packages destined for deployed troops in Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The volunteers will work all day, assembly-line style, packing Feetures performance socks, CDs from the Zac Brown Band and other artists, Schick Quatro razors, hot chocolate packages donated by SuperValu grocery stores, Girl Scout cookies, camokoozies donated by Southeast Mortgage, lip balm, combs and other holiday goodies and everyday necessities. Each care package will also include hand signed cards, many made by school children, wishing the soldier receiving it a happy holiday season.

This is the seventh year the Douglasville Soldiers Angels group has sent care packages overseas and, according to Dianne Moore with Soldiers’ Angels, the commitment from volunteers and sponsors continues to be strong.

“We’ve continue to be thrilled with the passion our volunteers and sponsors show for this project every year,” she said.  “For many people with relatives and friends stationed overseas, those loved ones are never far from your thoughts, and this is one way we can help our soldiers get a bit more joy from the holiday season.”
