Kiwanis Makes Christmas Special for Local Children

Each child has up to $100 to spend on Christmas gifts for themselves, siblings or other immediate family members.

The Kiwanis Club of Douglas County sponsors a Kids Christmas Special each year at the WalMart off Highway 5 in Douglasville on Dec. 19. Elementary students are selected, by school personnel, from five local lower income school areas to participate in this event.

Each child has up to $100 to spend on Christmas gifts for themselves, siblings or other immediate family members. The event started out having students escorted by local police officers but has grown to the point of having all law enforcement, firemen, local political leaders, well known business people and Kiwanians as escorts for the students as they shop.  Last year a total of 100 students were escorted while doing their shopping.  The kids are not allowed to purchase large items such as bicycles, expensive violent video games nor weapons (neither real nor toy) of any kind.
