Newcomer to Challenge Scott for Congress Bid

Marine Corps vet Michael Owens vows to be a "strong progressive voice," in Democratic primary bid to beat David Scott.

Democrat Michael Owens, a global business leader, entrepreneur and information technology executive, announced he will challenge incumbent David Scott for U.S. Congress in Georgia, District 13.

“I am excited to bring a strong progressive voice for Georgia’s 13th District in congress,” said Owens. “We find ourselves at a critical time in America. Creating an education system that benefits every American child, protecting our precious land, air and water through stronger environmental protections and building an economy that works as well for the middle-class and as it does the wealthiest among us.”

Owens served his country with distinction in the U.S. Marines and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for honorable service during the Persian Gulf War. “I’m proud of my service in the Marines Corps,” said Owens. “The high-tech training, leadership development and focus on service to one’s country has helped make me the man I am today.”

Michael has a passion for mentoring and giving back to the community. This can be seen in his service to many children advocacy groups and non-profit organizations. He currently serves as the Treasurer of the Young Democrats of Cobb County and serves on the state-wide Young Democrats of Georgia Finance committee. He is a long time member of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta and the Georgia Council of International Visitors. In 2013 he was named Vice President of policy and government affairs for the National Black & Latino Council.

Michael currently works as the East Coast Program Manager of State/Local Government and Higher Education Solutions division for Cisco Systems. Prior to that he was a senior manager and member of the global leadership team for SITA, an international information technology company specializing in providing IT and security services to foreign and domestic government entities and the global air transport industry.

During his career, he pioneered the practice of technical managed services in the professional services market as the founder and president of an innovative IT consulting firm.

In 2005 he earned the National Leadership Award and served as the Honorary Co-Chairman on the Congressional Business Advisory Council. Earlier in his career, he held several positions within finance sector at Fidelity Investments and First Union National Bank.

Michael received his B.S. from North Carolina A&T State University and his master’s degree from The Business School at Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his Doctorate in Business Administration from California InterContinental University.In 2011. He was selected to and participated in the first Emerging Leaders Program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
