Two Local Soldiers Among Iraq War Casualties

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week on March 19 and although officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.

One Douglasville and one Villa Rica soldier are listed among the casualties of the Iraq War.

The U.S-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago on March 19, 20033. By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 141 Georgians.

Among them are two soldiers from the Douglas County area. From the CNN war casualties website:

  • Sgt. Thomas James Strickland, 27, killed on Aug. 15, 2005: a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade, Georgia Army National Guard.
  • Sgt. Michael Christopher Hardegree, 21, killed on Sept. 10, 2007: a member of C Troop, 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
