Golf Ball Sized Hail Hits Douglasville

Golfball-sized hail pounded Douglas County and west Georgia Monday afternoon as severe thunderstorms moved through the area.

The hail caused damage to cars and houses, and led to multiple accidents on county roads, according to the Douglas County Sentinel. Power outages were also reported along with downed trees. Storms swept into the state roughly following Interstate 20 after hitting Alabama earlier in the day.

There were more than 50 emergency calls processed with issues ranging from minor fender benders, trees across the roadway, live power lines down to two minor house fires.

Thunderstorms dumped rain and hail, some as big as 2 inches in diameter, in western Georgia counties, according to Glenn Burns, chief meteorologist for Channel 2 Action News.

GreyStone Power reported that nearly 2,000 customers were without power in Douglas County and as many as 7,000 in Paulding County.

As of 8:45 p.m., Georgia Power reported a total of 73,000 without power in Georgia, according to 11 Alive. Of that count, 31,000 are in northwest Georgia, 24,000 in central Georgia, 10,000 in western Georgia and 6,700 in Metro Atlanta.

Douglas County Director of Communication and Community Relations Wes Tallon told the Sentinel that every fire and EMS worker in the county was dispatched and that call centers were overloaded with damage reports.
