Although pets make a wonderful Christmas present, the Douglas County Animal Shelter encourages families to come together to the Shelter to select an animal.  Adopting a pet as a family involves everyone in the process and helps to teach children that there are responsibilities in adding an animal member to the family.

Placing a dog or a cat in a box under the Christmas tree is not a good idea!  These are living beings who need food, water, air and sanitation!  In addition, the normal hectic activity of a Christmas morning may be scary to the pets who are already trying to adjust to a new environment.

A great alternative may be to put a stuffed animal under the tree with a note to the gift receiver that they will get to go to the Douglas County Animal Shelter after Christmas to pick out their own new pet!  The Douglas County Animal Shelter will be open Wednesday, Dec. 26 thorugh Monday, Dec. 31.
