Home Rule? Not So Much For Douglas Co

The redistricting that resulted from the 2010 Census has placed some lawmakers inside Douglas County lines whose interests are clearly with another area.

Why is the makeup of the Douglas County BOE an issue all of a sudden?  The current method was approved by both parties in 2008 and it seemed to be a non-issue until now.  Oh wait, I know what happened.  Sen. James actually took the time to listen to about 20 of her constituents who complained that the current selection process was unfair.  Of course that leaves 214,463 constituents that she should probably contact according to the data in this report at publicmapping.org, which has the 2010 census statistics broken down by Federal and State districts.  I’m not sure about you guys, but I don’t think a mere 20 people constitute a majority in this particular district.  As a matter of fact, if you look at the actual map of the State Senate Districts found at georgiainfo.galileo.usg.edu, you will clearly see how Senator James’ district is split fairly evenly in Fulton and Douglas Counties in actual acreage, but is heavily tilted in Fulton’s favor when you consider Douglas County by itself only has a population 133,355.  This is a definitive “red flag” that other motives could be behind the Senator’s desire to change the Douglas County BOE selection process in the interest of “fairness”.

Please read the entire article and contact your local officials about this issue.
