Executive Director, Sylvia Baker, is proud to announce the opening of Our Place, a day program services facility in Douglasville for adults with intellectual disabilities in Douglasville. Her organization, We Speak for Ourselves celebrated the grand opening of the facility on Sept. 20 with a Douglas County Chamber ribbon cutting. The facility is located at 2086 Fairburn Road in Douglasville.
We Speak for Ourselves offers programs for adults with developmental disabilities ages 19 and older that have challenging behaviors, maladaptive interpersonal relationships, physical disabilities, and sensory impairments. Their mission is to offer programs and services to empower individuals who have inspiring dreams to reach their maximum potential in life. In 2004 We Speak for Ourselves began as a sub-contracting agency and in 2009 became a provider under the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Development Disabilities. Their management team has extensive experience in offering support to adults and is fully capable in delivering quality service and intervention techniques that address complex medical, behavioral, and other challenges.
With 24/7 support and supervision, they strive to bridge the gap in communication between individuals and employees so that they can communicate with each other and gain an understanding of what each person is saying, whether verbal or non-verbal. Individuals are provided the opportunity to access the community through planned activities such as recreational outings, grocery shopping, clothes shopping, medical support, volunteering and non-paid support, religious services and more.
Douglas County Chamber Diplomat Stan Wenck congratulated Sylvia and her team on the opening of the facility. “The DC Chamber is excited to have We Speak for Ourselves as a service provider in Douglasville and Douglas County,” commented Wenck. “We look forward to supporting your organization and applaud the hard work your team does each day to make a difference in these individuals’ lives!”
