GreyStone Power warns of phone scam

GreyStone Power Corporation representatives are warning the cooperative’s members about a possible telephone scam. A GreyStone member recently received a phone call from a person who said that the member’s meter needed to be changed out and that he needed to immediately make a payment for the meter. This is not a GreyStone practice.

The alert follows a recent report of someone calling a cooperative member claiming to represent Tri-County EMC, a co-op in Gray, Ga. The scammer stated that Tri-County EMC had recently lost members’ checks, and then threatened to disconnect the member’s power if he did not immediately make a payment over the phone via credit card.

Georgia Power also recently cautioned its customers about suspected billing scams, usually involving callers who demand a credit card or debit number over the phone.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent GreyStone Power who tries to force you to make a payment over the phone, please be aware that this may be a scam. GreyStone members always have the option to make a payment online through our web self-service system. If you are ever suspicious of a caller, hang up the phone and call GreyStone directly before giving out any sensitive information.

If you do receive a suspicious phone call, please report it to your local law enforcement.
