Taste of Douglasville Arts Set for Saturday

The Taste of Douglasville Arts, presented by the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County, is now in its 20th year with Picnic on the Plaza scheduled for Friday.

In partnership with the City of Douglasville, the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County presents the 2013 Taste of Douglasville, now in its twentieth year and better and bigger than ever before -- and an event no one should miss! Proceeds of downtown Douglasville’s most popular event benefit the Cultural Arts Council and its programs.

Sherry Persons and Linda Worthan, our community’s two first ladies, will serve as our Honorary Co-Chairs for the event again this year; and our 2013 Event Chairs are the CAC Board Treasurer, Renee Kell, and CAC Volunteer Omar Daniel. WSB 750-AM Radio will also be our media sponsor again, the Atlanta Journal Constitution will publish and distribute more than 15,000 copies of the event program, and the Douglas County Sentinel will print a special event newsletter distributed during the 2013 Taste of Douglasville. There will be high quality outdoor arts and crafts booths, lots of children’s activities, and outstanding performers on the O'Neal Plaza stage. The 2013 Taste for Douglasville Arts will include more vendors, more restaurants, more performers, more participants, and more family fun as well as more promotion of this community cultural showcase in historic downtown Douglasville -- and a special festival kickoff on Friday night, “Picnic on the Plaza,”  Sponsors and vendors will receive free tickets to the opening event on May 17, but tickets ($15 per person, $12 for CAC members) will also be available for the general public at the Cultural Arts Center and the CAC website.

“Last year we introduced the Better Living Market during Taste of Douglasville,” commented CAC Director Laura Lieberman. “It was a huge success, and our festival was the first ever major “Tobacco Free” event in our community. The arts are all about quality of life, and that message came through loud and clear with lots of new healthy activities and food choices supported by our public health department, a new and important sponsor of the festival.”

“This year we are continuing to develop our Better Living Market, and we are focusing on more and more exciting activities in the Kids Korner, also supported by important new partnerships,” she continued. “Art Safari is our Kids Korner theme, and we are working with the county extension service, 4-H, Junior Master Gardeners, S.C.R.A.P. Bin, the Douglas County libraries, and the Junior League. All of these organizations are going to offer lots of hands-on activities, hand-outs and information for kids. There is even going to be a Cyber Safety Session. It is going to be a great Art Safari with kids going home with armloads of great crafts after lots of fun.”

In 2012, more than 15,000 people enjoyed Taste for Douglasville Arts, and their participation helped the Cultural Arts Council support school programs reaching more than 8,000 local students, affordable spring break and summer arts camps in county and city parks, free spring and fall concerts on O’Neal Plaza, critically acclaimed monthly gallery exhibits at the historic Roberts-Mozley House, and many more special events like the annual Cowboy Poets Gathering, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, and Dia de los Reyes Family Fiesta offered throughout the year.
