A Taste for Thai Leads to Writer's Reflections

A weekly column about writers and writing around Douglasville.

My sister and I wanted to treat ourselves to a delicious lunch and decided on Thai food.  We've both eaten at before and consider it one of our favorite spots.  I especially adore the Masaman entrée with Tofu, and Pud See-U Beef, but I have the feeling everything on the menu is quite tasty.

After parking the car and walking towards the door (which you have to pull hard to open) I noticed a large banner covering the plate glass window of the restaurant announcing a book release called The Art of War Applied to Wall Street.  It was only a peripheral attention signaling that something different was flying into my range of sight and, because we were busy chatting about this and that, the sign did not register completely in my consciousness until we were leaving the restaurant.  The book title also triggered a childhood memory about a school outing to the Wall Street Stock Exchange in New York City.  The hustle and bustle must have made a big impression on my young mind to remain a visual experience 50 years later.

I suddenly realized, as we opened the car door to leave, that this would be perfect for my next Patch feature.  After calling Y.K. Wong about his book I learned that his daughter Cindy Barnes owns the Taste of Thai restaurant, and she is obviously a very proud and supportive relative.

Y.K. Wong:  I write at my desk in my office.

Douglasville Patch:  When did you start writing?

Wong:  The Art of War Applied to Wall Street is my first book.  I began work on it in September, 2009.

Douglasville PatchWhy did you start writing?

Wong:  I started writing the book because I felt I had a mission to be of benefit to the American public with useful information about investing in the stock market.  I also wanted to provide the public with an accurate and updated translation of the classic book, The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

Douglasville Patch:  How do you write?

Wong:  I write everything by hand, getting all of my ideas lined up.  I then collaborate with Pat Kuzela, a Georgia educator, to polish my language and sentence structure. Together we compose the material on the computer.

Douglasville Patch:  What do you write?

Wong:  My material is non-fiction.

Douglasville Patch:  Where can we find your book The Art of War Applied to Wall Street?

Wong:  My book can be purchased either directly from my website at artofwaronwallstreet.com or also from in Douglasville.

Wong's favorite books:  Confucius, Taoism, Sun tzu (Art of War), Historical books, Nature,  Classic Chinese Martial Art books, Eastern and Western medical books.
