Play in Your Own Backyard

The September Saturdays festival, a car show and kayaking are just a few fun ways to spend the weekend right here in Douglas County.

1. What: September Saturdays Festival: "Heroes Day" and Movie

  • Where: Douglas County Courthouse
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 17, 11:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; movie is at 8 p.m.
  • Details: Visit one of the county’s biggest festivals where you can enjoy a community marketplace with over 120 vendors; inflatable games, train rides and fun activities; food; church and school music performances; “touch a truck” experience and much more. A movie will be shown outdoors at 8 p.m.; be sure to bring your lawn chair.

2. What: 17th Annual Sons of the American Legion Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show

  • Where: at 6449 Bankhead Highway
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m.
  • Details: Spend your Saturday admiring some of the hottest vehicles in town at the American Legion. The show is free and open to the public, and vendors are welcome. Vehicle registration is $18 in advance or $20 the day of the show. Barbecue plates will be offered for $7.

3. What: Fall Concert on the Plaza

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
  • Details: Enjoy classic rock and roll music from The Flying Oatsmen. The concert is free and open to the public.

4. What: Bike Poker Run to Benefit No Kid Hungry

  • Where: Starts at Kennesaw Joe’s Crab Shack and ends at Douglasville
  • When: Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the even takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18
  • Details: Attention bikers: enjoy great food, live music, games, corn hole, cool prizes and more for a good cause.

5. What: Sweetwater Creek by Kayak

  • Where: Sweetwater Creek State Park
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m.
  • Details: Enjoy the gorgeous, peaceful scenery of Sweetwater from a tandem, two-hour kayak ride. This event is $15 plus $5 for parking and is open to adults who can swim and have some type of canoeing or kayaking experience. Kayak, PFD and paddle are included.
