Troubled Youth Show Talent

Youth Villages in Douglasville to celebrate Global Youth Service Day.

On April 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. more than 100 children receiving help at the Youth Villages-Inner Harbour Campus will participate in a variety of service learning projects to celebrate Global Youth Service Day.

The youth, who are receiving help for emotional, behavioral and mental health issues, will join hundreds of thousands of other young people around the globe on Global Youth Service Day, an international youth movement and the world’s largest and longest-running service event.

Children receiving help at Youth Villages will participate in a variety of service learning projects led by AmeriCorps volunteers, including:

  • 9:15 to 11 a.m.             Creating concrete stepping stones for poetry and peace garden
  • 9:15 to 11 a.m.             On-campus farmers market
  • 9:15 to 11:30 a.m.        Building and painting bird and bat houses
  • 9:15 a.m. to noon         Painting personalized collages on benches
  • 9:15 to 11 a.m.            Writing and recording original songs, CDs to be distributed on campus
  • 9:15 to 11:30 a.m.        Creating anti-bullying video and posters
  • 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.        Decorating boxes to collect donations of used eyeglasses for the Lion’s Foundation Eye Glass Recycling Center
  • 10 a.m. to noon            Writing recipes and designing artwork for cookbook to be used for campus cooking classes and to be sold on campus
  • Noon to 1:45 p.m.        Beautification of dog kennel
  • 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.        Painting personalized collages on benches
  • 12:50 to 2 p.m.             Creating a solar system house
  • 1 to 1:45 p.m.               Community garden planting, weeding and painting rocks
  • 1 to 1:45 p.m.               Creating street art
  • 2 to 2:30 p.m.               Kite-flying ceremony; principal to address students

"Service learning is a method of teaching that aligns the academic curriculum with meaningful service," Caroline Ledlie, AmeriCorps program manager and director at the Youth Villages-Inner Harbour Campus, said. “Service learning also gives troubled youth an opportunity to give back to their community.”

At 2 p.m., the youth and AmeriCorps members will hold a Global Youth Service Day and Earth Day celebration to recognize the youth’s hard work. The youth will fly kites, and school principal Dr. Penny Honeycutt will address the students.

Several community partners have made the service-learning projects possible, including Atlanta Community ToolBank and . The on-campus farmers market is supported by a $500 grant from Youth Service America and Sodexo.
