Nice Today, Snow Wednesday, Thursday

It's your chance to be a star, with either an American-Idol-style poetry competition or a movie casting call. These are the five things necessary to know before you leave the house today, Feb. 8.

  1. Clouds should scatter today for clear skies by early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The high should reach around 44. The low tonight could reach 26. Wednesday will be sunny again, with a high near 46 but there is a chance of rain or snow before 1 a.m. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent. On Thursday, the chance for snow reaches 50 percent. 2. Got lyrics like lady Ga Ga? The American Poet—GA Sports project, developed by author and Executive Producer, Alice Shapiro, is a competition for poets to win a book contract. Borrowing from the American Idol legacy, a home audience will vote for the winner. The show will be broadcast on Cable TV and Internet TV so that a global audience can tune in and choose their favorite. All ages and experience are eligible to register for auditions. The deadline to register is Feb. 15. Submissions can be made by e-mail, snail mail and through a new technology voice recording from a computer or by phone. More details at here or contact Alice here.
  3. Outstanding police. During the Douglasville City Council meeting Monday, the 2010 Officer of the Year was awarded to Justin Manwaring; Supervisor of the Year to Lieutenant Tommy Deming; and Civilian Employee of the Year to Jennifer Graham.
  4. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students placed in five events at the Region Leadership Competition. Simon Akinwumiju placed fourth in Accounting I; Courtney Boss placed eighth in Economics; Shanara Arila placed third in Impromptu Speaking; Jasmine Brown placed third in Spreadsheet Applications;  Rasheed Tromp and Shamarr Wilson placed third in Entrepreneurship; and Jasmine Dennis and Javonn Moore placed first in Entrepreneurship. Both of the Entrepreneurship teams will advance to the state level competition to be held in March.
  5. The announced Monday that there will be a casting call held by NYC Casting and New Life Casting on Feb. 12.  The casting call is taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are looking for a variety of paid extras to portray characters during the Depression Era for the movie, "Wettest County." Filming begins near the end of February and they have a need for various Caucasian and African American individuals. Other ethnic and racial backgrounds are encouraged to attend for consideration with future productions. The casting call is at 100 Governor's Trace, Suite #105, Fayetteville, 30215.
