New Principal, Other School Matters Announced

These are a few of the things you need to know today, March 28.

  1. New Principal named at Mason Creek Middle School. Eric Collins has been named by the Douglas County Board of Education to serve as principal of effective July. He will replace current principal Kay Davis who is retiring at the end of the current school year. A veteran administrator in the Douglas County School System, Collins has been principal of Turner Middle School since 2007. He was assistant principal at Lithia Springs Elementary School, 2004-2007, and , 2002-2004. From 1994-2002 he was a teacher at Cedar Hill Middle School in Cedartown.   2. Professional of the Year named. Karen Sallee, special education paraprofessional at Sweetwater Elementary School, has been selected as the 2011 Georgia Council for Exceptional Children Paraprofessional of the Year. This award recognizes a paraprofessional who currently provides direct services to students with exceptionalities and whose work exemplifies the best in special education support.   3. Text books on display. The public is invited to review textbooks, which are being recommended for adoption and use in the Douglas County School System for High School Social Studies. These books are on display at the from March 28 through April 1 and April 11 through April 15. The books are available for review Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Local citizens reviewing the textbooks will be able to make written comments on the recommended book.
  4. Dates for Douglas County high school graduations released: May 27: at the University of West Georgia at 8 p.m. and Lithia Springs High School at Lithia Springs High School at 8 p.m. May 28:at University of West Georgia at 10 a.m. and at University of West Georgia at 2 p.m.
  5. Douglasville’s first-ever Earth Day celebration will be held on April 23 in Downtown Douglasville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many local organizations and businesses will be participating to provide fun activities for the whole family. Admission is free. There will be demonstrations on activities such as recycling, seed germination, composting, and soil health and testing, as well as exhibits with reptiles including the venomous snakes and spiders of Georgia. Local choirs and bands will provide entertainment, and there will be an Earth Day pageant.
