Lighted Veterans Parade

This year's parade will honor the memory of the 48 Douglas County citizens who have been killed in action.

The 14th Annual Veterans Day Lighted Parade will be tonight at 7 p.m. from Douglas County High School, and the public is invited to line the streets to say “thank you” for our freedoms.

The “Parade with a Purpose” salutes our active military, veterans, reserves and the U. S. Flag, and requires all entries to do so.

This year’s parade will be led by members of the Town and Country and Sweetwater Garden Clubs who will be carrying 48 roses in honor and memory of the 48 Douglas County citizens who have been killed in action. The parade’s color guard will be from the U.S. Navy Sea Cadets Warrior Division.

The John Mohr Mackintosh Pipe and Drum Corps and the Alexander, Lithia Springs, and Douglas County High School bands will provide music throughout the procession.  There will be a designated performance area on Campbellton Street opposite the back parking lot of Regions Bank.

The Historic Marietta Trolley will be in the parade carrying any active military or veteran who wishes to ride in the parade. No reservation is needed; anyone wishing to ride the trolley need only to board it at the parade line-up in front of Douglas County High School.  Military units, JROTC units, and veterans groups have registered to be in the parade.

The Douglas County Parade is the only known night lighted Veterans Day Parade in the Nation. The Douglas County Parade is always held on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, regardless of the day of week, since Nov. 11 was the date that World War I ended. The parade progresses along lighted streets.

The parade begins at Douglas County High School; then proceeds north on Campbellton Street; west on Church Street; and south on Bowden, Woodrow and Campbellton Streets back to the high school.

The parade is organized and presented on behalf of the veterans of Douglas County by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners through its Department of Communications and Community Relations.
