Honoring Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice

American Legion Post 145, Legion Riders for AmVets, local Boy Scouts and the community met at the courthouse Sunday for stirring speeches and then placed flags on graves to honor veterans all throughout Douglas County.

American Legion Post 145, Legion Riders for AmVets, local Boy Scouts and the community met at the courthouse Sunday to say prayers and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. The group then proceeded to local cemeteries and placed flags on graves to honor veterans all throughout Douglas County.

The events began with a Memorial Service at Douglas County Courthouse with featured speaker Dale Barnett. Barnett is a Douglas County resident and Past State Commander of The American Legion for the 2007-2008 year.  He is also a 1974 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY.  He spent 22 years in the Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1966.  He served in the Persian Gulf and was awarded the Bronze Star.  He currently serves as Chairman of the National Economics Commission in Washington, DC

American Legion Post Commander Bob Budahazy was also on hand to give stirring remarks.

Formed following World War I, The American Legion continues to work for all veterans, their families and the children of the nation. The largest wartime veterans organization has 2.5 million members in nearly 15,000 post around the globe.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868, by Gen. John Logan, national Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
