honored fallen military heroes by having a special celebration of worship Sunday, a tribute to local soldiers. An honor guard detail from the 94th Air Lift Wing of Dobbins Air Reserve Base presented the colors during the worship service and then performed a 21-gun salute and "Taps" on the church's front lawn afterward.
The Rev. Gene Fields paid tribute to soldiers during his worship service while a slide show was presented, featuring soldiers related to members of the congregation. There was also a choral tribute, with the choir singing "America the Beautiful," "My Country Tis of Thee" and "Heaven's Greatest Soldier."
After "Taps" was played, a flag was raised that flew over the Army Life Support Area, Ali Al Salem Air Base (ALSA), Kuwait, on Jan. 11, 2008. It was flown in the church's honor and was presented to Heritage Baptist on March 19, 2008, on behalf of the men and women of the U.S. armed forces serving at ALSA during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
World War II veteran Albert Cosby raised the flag. Cosby was one of the soldiers who helped free Normandy.
