More than 6,000 members and their families attended the 2011 Annual Meeting of Members, with 1,976 registered members taking an active interest in their cooperative. This year’s event focused on a celebration of GreyStone’s history and 75th anniversary, while also looking to the future.

This is the second year that GreyStone has brought attention to energy conservation through a Together We Save® Energy Efficiency Expo. Several specialized businesses gathered at the expo to demonstrate the value of energy-efficient products and services. GEMC Federal Credit Union was also on-site offering members zero percent APR (Annual Percentage Rate) loans for energy efficiency improvements.

Other highlights included a free Chick-fil-A® biscuit for members and their families, a health fair, carnival rides, games for children, pony rides, a book fair, child identification program and a musical performance. WSB broadcast live at the event with The Lawn and Garden Show with Walter Reeves and Captain Herb Emory’s NASCAR show.

During the business portion of the meeting, GreyStone President/CEO Gary Miller told members about the cooperative’s successful past year. He also encouraged members to contact Congress concerning the affordability of electricity. “Without an active and ongoing conversation with Congress, electric bills could be forced vastly upward due to restrictions on plant building and plant emissions and Environmental Protection Agency requirements. Please visit ourenergy.coop and make your feelings known to your congressmen.

“Your action or inaction can make a huge difference in the size of your electric bill in the future,” Miller said.

Mary Cochran, Irene Meadows and M.C. Austin were honored during the business meeting for having the most years as GreyStone members. The three took the stage to cut a special 75th anniversary cake.

The event concluded with 53 door prizes. GreyStone members Keith and Cyndi Roberts of Douglasville won the grand-prize giveaway, a 2012 Hyundai Accent donated by Thornton Road Hyundai. Member Gwen Thomason of Douglasville was also a big winner, taking home diamond jewelry donated by D. Geller & Son.
