Google to Teach Free Computer Classes

Google will be providing free one-on-one computer instruction to the public Monday and Tuesday, June 10 and 11, at the Dog River Library.

Google, the world’s largest Internet information provider, will be providing free one-on-one computer instruction to the public Monday and Tuesday, June 10 and 11, at the Dog River Library as part of GoogleServe2013, the firm’s global week of service.

The computer experts from Google will teach computer basics, g-mail (email), Google documents and collaboration, calendar, Android tablets, Android phones, safety on the Internet, and lots of other information. A dozen Google employees from their Douglas County data center are volunteering their time to give one-on-one instruction in hour-long segments to anyone who wishes to learn computer basics or a little more advanced applications. The instruction is free of charge, and will utilize 20 computers in the Dog River Library. The public may also bring their own technology - Android phones, laptops and tablets - to utilize the Library’s Wi-Fi connection and learn on their own equipment. Google staff will also be bringing Chrome books and Android phones to use.

The classes will be held hourly from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday and Tuesday in the Dog River Library, located at 6100 Georgia Highway 5, about 1½ miles south of the Dog River bridge. All services are free and open to the Public, but reservations are requested by signing up for a designated time at the Dog River Library Circulation Desk, or by calling 770-577-5186. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are requested.

The Google staff will also be teaching a class on g-mail at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 15, at the Library.

GoogleServe began in 2008 as an effort for Google employees to give back to the community while deepening connections with local areas and strengthening its bond as a global team.  The event has grown each year, and has ranged from youth education about on-line bullying to cleaning up public areas such as parks and rivers.
