From Douglasville's first-ever Earth Day to a Walk-a-Thon this Saturday, these are some of the things you need to know today, March 15.

  1. Sports Physcials for Youth. As children and teenagers head to the field to participate in organized sports activities, MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics inside select /pharmacy stores across the country are making it easy and more affordable for them to get the physicals they need to play.
    The physicials are being offered currently, through May 31, MinuteClinic will offer spring sports physicals at $39 ($20 off the standard price of $59). The pre-participation physicals–required by many states, school systems and athletic leagues–are administered by certified MinuteClinic nurse practitioners and physician assistants who specialize in family health care. Exams are offered seven days a week, including weekday evenings, and no appointment is necessary.
  2. Walk-a-Thon for Higher Standards Foundation, Inc. will be held on Saturday. Walk to promote the importance of family, fitness, and fellowship for stronger communities.   3. Watch Poetry Contestants compete for free books at , March 26, from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Watch and root on the four finalists who won the first round in the American Poet–GA Sports TV competition.  Skylar Suggs, the 10-year-old Youth Spokesperson, and the finalists will have a 3-minute time limit to stuff as many books into their basket as they can. Door prizes include a free 30-minute massage by Ileana Castillo West; two dozen cookies baked in your home by Chef Tiffany; and a copy of The Art of War Applied to Wall Street by Y.K. Wong.   5. Douglasville’s first-ever Earth Day celebration will be held on April 23 in Downtown Douglasville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many local organizations and businesses will be participating to provide fun activities for the whole family. Admission is free. There will be demonstrations on activities such as recycling, seed germination, composting, and soil health and testing, as well as exhibits with reptiles including the venomous snakes and spiders of Georgia. Local choirs and bands will provide entertainment, and there will be an Earth Day pageant.
