Fixing Up the Interstate: Expect Delays This Summer

Georgia Department of Transportation will be fixing roadways on Interstate Highway 20 and Interstate Highway 285 this summer.

In other words, expect traffic delays in the area throughout the summer.

According to a press release from Douglas County, the DOT is allocating $13 million to replace concrete slabs on I-285. The stretch of roadway is between Paces Ferry Road and Camp Creek Parkway. Another $7.5 million is being spent on replacing bridge expansion joints and headers on the 16 bridges of I-20 between the Downtown Connector and the Chattahoochee River in southern Cobb County. The bridge work will fix all of the potholes that have developed as well. $40 million is directed toward rebuilding the I-285 ramps at Atlanta Road. The new ramps are expected to allow easier access both north and southbound to the highway.

No exact dates are given for when the roadwork will begin. The I-285 repairs are slated to begin in the early summer and be completed in October 2015. I-20 repairs begin soon and completed by May 2015.

Most of the construction is expected to take place on weeknights and weekends. The DOT predicts that this will heavily impact Westside traffic. So plan extra travel time. Work schedules and pending lane closures along with alternate routes will be provided soon.
