E-Book of the Week: The Everything Guide to Cooking for Children with Autism

Librarian Lindy A. Moore recommends "The Everything Guide to Cooking for Children with Autism," by authors Megan Hart and Kim Lutz, as this week's downloadable e-book.

As a mom with a full time job, I know that coming up with quick and easy meals can be a struggle. But when one of your children is on the autism spectrum, you are faced with a whole new set of challenges. What might be a staple meal at the average household may send your special needs child into a total meltdown over taste, texture, or smell. So how do you keep a well-balanced palate in a home with a child with sensitivities? Many studies have suggested that autism symptoms can be calmed with a diet that is gluten and casein free. That means taste-free too, right? Not so! As demonstrated in this book, you can have a healthy and tasty meal without gluten or casein. This cookbook presents more than 200 family friendly recipes that are gluten and casein free and actually taste great. Crispy Potato-Crusted Chicken is a new favorite in our house! Rest assured, your family does not have to suffer just to meet the dietary needs of an autistic child.

"The Everything Guide." is full of all types of great recipes, odds and ends, and tips for how to help your autistic child at the dinner table and at school. Sample menus are included, as well as letters to send to your child's school explaining their unique needs. I have always been a fan of the "Everything" book series for giving people a basic understanding of particular topics. After using this cookbook at home with my son on the autism spectrum, I might just have to buy a copy of my own.
