Donated Washer, Concert on Weekend
These are the five things you need to know today, Sept. 13.
- There will be a free Tutoring Expo held to Assist Parents today and Thursday. Today's is at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Sweetwater Elementary School Cafeteria and Thursday's expo will be at, 1 and 5 p.m. at the Turner Middle School Cafeteria. All students who attend Sweetwater or Turner are eligible for free tutoring on a tiered system. Many tutoring agencies will be available at this tutoring expo to assist parents in selected the best possible free tutoring program for their children. - There will be a downtown parking meeting held Wednesday, at 9 a.m. Parking options during the construction period of the new downtown conference center will be discussed. The city will also be providing parking maps, a sample of the new parking signage, and a representative from the construction company will be available for questions. The meeting will be in the conference center annex located in-between and the .
- The Fall Concert Series will continue Saturday with the Flying Oatsmen bringing their great mix of rock and roll classics, blues music and groove to for the first time. Lead guitarist Jerry Sorn was originally from upstate New York but settled in Macon where he played with the Tall Dogs during the 1970s and then later with Michael Clark’s Byrds during several Department of Defense tours to 16 countries in the Caribbean, Central America and Africa. Russell Brown, also on guitar, began playing when he was 12. Marty Kelly has been playing harmonica since he found one on a hiking trail more than thirty years ago. Bass player Scott Balun blends his stylings wherever the music takes him with strong influences from everything from the Grateful Dead to gospel. Mark Chester, a graphic artist, plays on the bongos, and Darren Goot completes The Flying Oatsmen’s percussion section.
- The CAC's Fall Concert Series will include distinguished percussionist Yonrico Scott on Sept. 24, who offers Douglas County concert-goers a wonderful first opportunity to hear his world-class music in downtown Douglasville. By age 7, he was playing professionally with several gospel groups in Detroit, Michigan. Gospel music, along with Detroit’s thriving “Motown sound,” were among his earliest influences. Since 1995 Yonrico Scott has toured the world as a member of The Derek Trucks Band including multiple headline tours of Japan and Europe as well as performing with music legends like Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, John Popper, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Gregg Allman, Government Mule, Taj Mahal, Little Milton, Mavis Staples, and Santana. In January 2010, Yonrico collected a Grammy for the Best Contemporary Blues CD for his work on the Derek Trucks' Band "Already Free." His Broadway tour performances include “The Wiz,” “5 Guys Named Moe,” and “Dreamgirls.”
- , , recently donated a new washing machine to the to help wash towels, blankets and other items the shelter uses to care for the hundreds of animals that come through the facility each week. The Douglas County Animal Shelter is owned and operated by the , and is located at 1755 County Services Road adjacent to the Cedar Mountain Landfill (Cedar Mountain Road northwest of Douglasville).
