Children's Reading Program Opens Today

These are the five things you need to know today, May 31.

  1. The weather was great Memorial Day weekend and we can expect the thermometer to keep on rising, according to the National Weather Service. Today the high is expected to reach 91 degrees with a low around 68 tonight. Tomorrow the high is expected to reach 95 degrees. For Douglasville's complete forecast, read here.
  2. "One World, Many Stories" Children's Summer Reading Program opens at and Lithia Springs Libraries today. Registration Opens at 9 a.m. Register at the library where your child will attend. If attending both libraries' programs, you will need to register at each library. Admission is free. Programs go from June 6 through July 13. This is a program of the through the Douglas County and Lithia Springs Libraries, for more information, call 770-920-7125.
  3. The Japanese Ukiyo-E Prints at the Cultural Arts Center Artists Reception will be held on Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free. The exhibit will be on view through June 24. For more information, contact the at 770-949-2787 or www.artsdouglas.org.
  4. The Annual Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Douglas County Courthouse. The Artists Market is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The Flower Show is Saturday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The Garden Tours with Shuttles is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. There will be musical entertainment, food, demonstration gardens and exhibits.   5. A Fishing Derby will be held at on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The event is free to children ages 2 through 16 and seniors age 50 and over. T-shirts will be given to the first 300 to register and there will be door prizes and awards. This is a program of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners through its Parks and Recreation Department, and the Tri-County Bass Club, 770-920-7129.
