Celebrate Labor Day Locally

Fireworks, a parade and a barbecue are just a few fun ways to spend the three-day weekend.

1. What: Labor Day Fireworks

  • Where: Fireworks will be displayed from and can be seen from various parts of the city, with the best viewing sites being the area and the and parking lots.  
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 3 at dark
  • Details: The weather may have left Douglasville without a July 4 fireworks display, but it has been rescheduled for this weekend. Everyone is welcome.

2. What: 48th Annual Labor Day Parade

  • Where: Downtown Douglasville (Parade route is Church Street to Rose Avenue to Pinecrest Drive to .)
  • When: Monday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m.
  • Details: Grab a seat along the parade route and enjoy the festivities put on by the Sweetwater Shrine Club.

3. What: Rudolph Harper Labor Day Barbecue

  • When: Monday, Sept. 5, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  
  • Details: After the Labor Day parade, head to Hunter Park to enjoy a day of food and fun. Hosted by Masonic Lodge No. 289, the barbecue will offer pork, cole slaw, Brunswick stew, potato chips and bread from for just $7 a plate. A drink concession stand will also be available. In addition to good food, there will be several vendors, snow cones, funnel cakes, pony rides, jump toys, face painting, appearances by local political candidates and Miss Georgia 2011, Michaela Lackey, is expected to be there.

4. What: New Manchester History Hike

  • Where: Sweetwater Creek State Park
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 3 at 10 a.m.
  • Details: Take a mile-long hike through Sweetwater Creek State Park and learn about the history of the Sweetwater Creek Valley. Attendees will be allowed to go inside the ruins of the Civil War-era New Manchester textile mill and get an up close look at the beautiful rapids. Price is $4 plus $5 for parking.

5. What: Trade Day @ The Mill

  • Where: The Mill at 106 Temple Street in Villa Rica
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Details: Antiques, crafts, collectibles, art, flowers, toys, fruits and vegetables, furniture, clothes jewelry and more are just a few of the things you’ll find at this event, which is part yard sale, part farmer’s market. Have some things you’d like to sell? You can also sign up to be a vendor for just $20.
