Celebrate Fall with BBQs, Car Show

Enjoy some BBQ, plant some seeds or attend a fall festival this weekend.

1. What: St. Theresa Church Fall Festival  

  • Where: on Prestley Mill Road
  • When: Saturday, Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Details: The fall festival will include children’s activities, such as a giant slide, trackless train and inflatable bouncer; carnival games; a variety of food; a cakewalk; arts and crafts vendors; a silent auction of various donated items, including professional help with home repair projects and more. Carnival games will be $0.50 each and the cakewalk is $2 per play. An all-day children’s fun pass is available for $7.50. On-site premium parking is available, as well as off-site parking with a shuttle.

2. What: Car Dudes Annual Charity Car Show

  • Where:
  • When: Saturday, Oct. 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Details: Bring your family (including your dogs on leashes) and enjoy a fun day of cards, food, auctions, prizes, raffles, vendors and more. Registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and awards will be handed out at 3:30 p.m. Entry fees are $25. Classic and custom cars, trucks, street rods, hot rods, rat rods, imports and motorcycles will be on hand. The Douglas County Humane Society will also be there. Proceeds go to a ministry that repairs and donates cars for local families in need.

3. What: Fall Charity BBQ

  • Where:
  • When: Saturday, Oct. 15, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Details: The church will be holding its annual Fall Charity BBQ to benefit the local Good Samaritan Center, which is a food bank and emergency outreach center. Tickets are $10 each for an evening of great food and music.

4. What: Native Plant Restoration Volunteer Day for National Public Lands Day

  • Where: Sweetwater Creek State Park
  • When: Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Details: Put on some comfortable clothes and shoes, grab your work gloves and head over to Sweetwater to help plant over 1,000 native plant seedlings on the “Jack’s Hill” area of the park. The seedlings are Georgia Peidmont Ecotype, which is a grass that provides habitats for birds, insects and small mammals. The event is free to attend, but parking at the park is $5.

5. What: The Atlanta Bar-B-Q Festival

  • Where: Atlantic Station in Atlanta
  • When: Friday, Sept. 30, from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 1, from noon to 8 p.m.
  • Details: No matter which type of regional BBQ you prefer, you’ll be able to enjoy some of the best food in the city from top local restaurants. The festival will also include a competition for backyard and professional teams, live music, a kids’ village with games and activities and a market village with unique and handcrafted items for sale. Tickets are $6 in advance or $10 the day of the show. Kids 12 and under are free. All food sales are cash only.
