Celebrate Earth Day in Douglasville Saturday

First-ever Earth Day event in Douglasville will be held on O'Neal Plaza.

Residents of Douglasville will have an opportunity to "Get Down to Earth" this Saturday, during the first-ever Earth Day celebration held on . Fun and education will collide in Historic Downtown Douglasville from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many local organizations and businesses will be participating to provide fun activities for the whole family and admission is free.

Exhibits with reptiles, including the venomous snakes and spiders of Georgia, will be a highlight for the kids; while everyone will learn something through demonstrations on recycling, seed germination, composting and soil health. Local choirs and bands will provide entertainment and there will be an Earth Day pageant.

"It's important for the community to be involved in educating each other to keep the Earth healthy," Ryan Adams said, the AP Biology teacher from Alexander High School and organizer of the event. "It does not cost anything to attend and people can learn about water conservation, saving electricity and composting. Everyone will learn something.

"This is the only Earth we have," he added. "Our Earth Day Celebration is a great way for families to learn about the small things they can do to keep our home healthy. It will be a great celebration for all ages. Let's all do our part."

Sponsorship proceeds, after expenses for the Earth Day Celebration, will directly benefit the science program at . It will fund the Advanced Placement (AP) Biology field trip to the Marine and Science Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island providing students an opportunity to work with local scientists researching marine life and local ecosystems. Sponsorship funds will also be used to purchase instructional and science laboratory materials for classes at Alexander.

"My experience in AP Biology has opened the door to my future. I can do something I love studying," Ashley Gray, 18, said.

Celeste Giangiacomo, 18, appreciates AP Biology, adding, "This class is amazing: AP Biology is preparing me for many other life sciences in college. I plan on majoring in either Biology or Animal Science."

Leslie Stewart, 18, finds the course compelling: "AP Biology is an incredibly engaging class. We are always being challenged to think outside the box and we take part in many fun labs and activities."
