Award-Winning Standard Flower Show Highlights Hydrangea Festival

You can enter in a variety of categories — and not just hydrangeas.

The National award-winning Standard Flower Show is the centerpiece of the annual Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival, and this year has over 66 classes in the Horticulture Division that anyone can enter!

It’s not just hydrangeas!

In addition to hydrangeas, entries can be submitted in numerous categories including roses, ivy, hosta, ferns, herbs, flowering perennials, orchids, African violets, begonias, cactus, evergreens, shrubs, and even trees!  All entries are cut specimens and are displayed in the Standard Flower Show in green bottles.

All entries are eligible for ribbons and awards, and all are judged by persons certified to be judges by the National Garden Clubs.

Horticulture entries are not judged against each other; rather they are judged against the perfect standard for that species.  Instructions on how to cut and submit horticulture entries is also available on the Standard Flower Show page of the Festival web site.

The Standard Flower Show will be open to the Public from 1 - 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 7th, and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 8th, and will be housed in the Atrium of the Douglas County Courthouse.  The “Best of Show” winners will be displayed on the landing of the Atrium’s Grand Staircase.  The Flower Show has free admission and is open to the Public.

The Standard Flower Show is organized and produced by the four garden clubs of Douglas County - Ama-Kanasta, Skint Chestnut, Sweetwater, and Town and Country - and assisted by the Douglas County Master Gardeners.  Mrs. Kathy Henry from the Ama-Kanasta Garden Club is this year’s Show Chairman.

The Standard Flower Show has won Best Flower Show in its category for the past six years in the State of Georgia and in the Nation, as well as numerous other awards.
