Mason has been gardening for sixteen years and this year has cultivated her largest garden yet with multiple raised beds and greenhouses. “I was ninth out of ten kids,” Mason explained. “My mother always kept a garden and I was always on her heels. I’m the only one who took up gardening.” To further her skills, she attends conferences, organic programs and reads articles online. She calls herself “basically a backyard …
For the second day in a row and the fourth time in two weeks, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division has issued a Smog Alert for metro Atlanta. Today's forecasted Air Quality Index number is 106. According to the government website AirNow, "Think of the AQI as a yardstick that runs from 0 to 500. The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health concern. For example, an AQI value of 50 represents good air quality with little potential to affect public health, while an AQI value over 300 represents hazardous air quality." The website goes on to …
On days like today when the air quality in the area is poor, most of us acknowledge that it’s just a terrible thing and then the realization sinks in that we can’t do anything about it and so we move on with our already too-busy lives. But the students, faculty and parents at Dorsett Elementary School weren’t daunted by the seemingly herculean task and set out to make some small changes that made a big difference. "Our principal, Kacia Thompson encouraged the school to take the lead in improving the health of our students by participating in the (Clean Air Campaign's School) No Idling Program…

Who doesn't have a pair of old flip flops flopping around somewhere? Maybe you've lost one shoe from two different sets and you're running around the beach in one yellow shoe and one green one. Or maybe your flip flops are just flipping or flopping too much. Since you need some new shoes anyway, why not gather up those old, smelly flip flops and turn them into something good–like a playground. That's right. The Old Navy store at Arbor Place Mall is accepting your old flip flops and then recycling them into playgrounds which will be donated to communities throughout the country. They're also …

It is believed that nearly 4.9 million barrels of oil (200 million gallons) have leaked into the ocean. The disaster has been the most devastating and largest oil spill in the U.S. history, and scientists say there might be long-term health impact on humans and animals, as studies continue. Wanting to know what makes a home "green" certified, I recently had the experience of seeing first hand an EarthCraft "green" certified home (ECGCH).  Frank Irons, owner of Irons Construction, Inc. and volunteer builder of the home, took us on a very informative tour.  The Douglas County project was adopted by the Westside Home Builders Association (HBA) and all the members who participated became "green" certified, which added to their list of credentials.  They have a model in one of the rooms of the home which shows all that was done "inside" the construction, so others can see what the …
Tamica Wilder used to work at the Chartis Insurance Agency in Alpharetta. She left for work at 6 a.m. and got home, after a 50-mile drive in rush-hour traffic, at about 7 p.m.  Once, when there was a snow storm, she remembered it took her about four hours to get home. Today she still works for the Chartis Insurance Agency but now it's mostly from home. Since last April she's been telecommuting to work four days a week and she said her family life has improved because of it. Wilder's husband used to have to take the their two young children, Kirah, 5, and Kaidyn, 3,  to school everyday and …
