We live in a world filled with hustle and bustle. Ball games, dance recitals, practice for what ever, school functions and board meetings. We live in a time when our time is occupied and stretched in every direction. We feel a need, even a right, to be constantly entertained. Whether it be on HDTV, I-pod, smart-phone or text gadget, we must be involved in some diversion. But, as Patch Mama Matters columnist, Minde Herbert pointed out... the dishes (among other things) can wait! Our children suffer from an inability to be quiet. We have lost the talent for setting time aside for stillness and …
My wife and I were having lunch awhile back at the Chick-fil-A on Highway 5 (one of my favorite places to grab a bite). As we were eating, I was just casually watching the faces of my fellow patrons. Some were with friends or spouses, possibly even co-workers–but what stuck in my mind was the faces of those that were eating alone and looked lonely. It seems to me, that in this day of high-tech gadgets and instant connectivity, there is no reason why we should look lonely. But, we are alone. A great many of us do not know a close friend or have a personal connection with someone. We fall prey …
The love of God surpasses anything that we could understand. It is reasonable for us to love our children. It is understandable for us to go out of our way and make sacrifice for our family and close friends. We may even feel pressed to rise to the occasion for what we deem to be a worthy cause, or the plight of a co-worker. These are reasonable, logical, compassionate responses to the needs of others. But the Bible tells us something different about the love of God. Romans 5:6-8 tells us: “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a …
According to Phil (and General Beau Lee concurs), we are going to have an early end to our wintry days. I'm sure this comes as a relief to many, especially after the ice that shut down Douglasville. Of course these predictions fall into a category of playful traditions. But there is certainly a blessing associated with knowing the seasons and the times. The Bible tells us from the beginning “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15 And let them be for lights in the…
At the very end of 2010, several judges took their oaths of office in Douglas County. Read complete story here. This is not a comment of political views or the qualifications of the judges, but more about our duties as a private resident. The Bible has much to say about judges, and their rolls in governing the people. "... the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them." Judges 2:16 The judges were set to preserve the peace and settle disputes. To hear the complaints of the people and make a ruling based on the facts at hand. Things have not changed…
The New Year is here. The time when we resolve to shed old habits or make new ones. The time when we endeavor to undo the indulgences of the holiday meals and fit into our skinny jeans or knuckle down and set goals of health and financial prosperity. When we embark on this New Years resolution, there are a few things to keep in mind. I think the Bible sums it up well in Proverbs 30:7-9 . "Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, …
A recent Douglasville Patch article shows photos of the trees at the Douglas County/Douglasville Cultural Arts Center, decorated by area students. Take note that most of the decorations are of angels. It is not happenstance that angels, the messengers of the Lord, mark this season. It was, after all, an angel that heralded the birth of Jesus. And it is His birth we celebrate.Luke 2:7-11 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds …
In the recent Douglasville Patch article on the Students Nontraditional Road to Success, one of the students was quoted as saying "What do I do? I'm drowning." Friends, at one time or another, we have all come that crossroad. That place where we feel overwhelmed and undone. The lesson we can learn from these students is the blessing of perseverance. It brings to mind the story in Mark 2:3-5 "And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. 4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had …
