A Punishment Deserved or Too Severe?

The appeal of Sean Payton and his other comrades were denied. Is this a statement to the NFL or is it a statement to the retired NFL players seeking compensation for their post lingering injuries?

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell decided to deny the appeal and uphold the suspensions of the Sean Payton, Ricky Loomis, and Joe Vitt. Goodell also added that after the coaches suspensions are served, He will review their status and determine if they will be reinstated. Payton is serving a one year suspension without pay which begins on April 16th, Loomis the General Manager will serve an eight game suspension when the season begins and Joe Vitt the Assistant Coach will serve a 6 game suspension when the regular season begins.

The debate of this topic lies on the fact that whether Goodell motive is punishing the New Orleans Saints because of violent intentions of targeting and injuring players or is it to calm down all of the lawsuits coming from former players. For the last four or five years former NFL players have been complaining about their repercussion of injuries, including post concussion syndromes they are suffering from. It seems like the lawsuits are increasing more and more with every concussion that is magnified by the NFL. Now, I'm not saying it shouldn't be and concussions aren't serious but the league has made concussions more aware than ever. When you think about it, Goodell didn't concentrate on "hitting defenseless players" and "too aggressive hits" until these accusations came from the former players.

I agree with making the game a safer environment but can you really do that? The sole purpose of the defense is to keep the the opponent out of their end zone by tackling and trying to jar the football lose. Because of the recent rule changes and extra personal foul and fines, it has players actually thinking about hitting the opponent right before the act of hitting the opponent. Football was made to be violent and physical and these players have been taught and trained to be violent and physical since pee wee football. Can you imagine telling Ronnie Lott that he can't hit a player if he drops the ball or if the receiver's head was turned around then you can't hit him even if you're trying to make him drop the ball. Is the league getting too soft?

I believe Greg Williams intent of knocking players out wasn't his main goal but can this be a way to inspire his defense to play with  passion? Remember most of these football players has families to feed, therefore he has to make a decision in the middle of a football play that can cost him a fine or a game suspension which will deduct a game check. I don't believe Williams actually yelled at his defense for not knocking a certain player out of the game after a loss. Yet still having a bounty on some one is malicious and wrong. Now if it they didn't target a certain player and said whoever knocks out anyone will get a reward; what would have been the results then?

It was reported that Goodell claimed he warn Sean Payton several times during the season to put a stop to it but Payton never stopped it. I understand him getting punished but getting punished for a whole year not only sends a message to the NFL but an even bigger message to the retired players that Goodell is doing everything in his power to make the game less violent.

If it is true that Goodell warned Payton numerous times to stop, then he definitely deserve the suspension. A whole year? Heck no, but I think at least 8-10 games without pay would be good. At the end of the day, with or without Sean Payton running the show, it's Drue Brees team and I really don't think it's going to effect their season! The Saints still has their core from last year and at best...they will be at least 10-6 with a playoff seed!!!

Yeah I believe that Payton should be suspended too but not one year. They should (the Saints) be alright but they will miss that fiery coach. when it comes down to the last two minutes then that's when they will miss Payton as far as play calling.

Goddell is turning the league into a pillow league. Let's be real, every team does this. Maybe its extreme to say take out an ACL, but I see nothing wrong with saying take this PLAYER OUT. THAT'S WHY YOU PLAY D!! If my Bears crushed Manning in the 2006 Super Bowl, we would have won hands down! If an offensive player celebrates after a TD why can't a defensive player celebrate after a good hit. You play to hit, your taught to hit, not give the RB or WR a pillow on the way down to the grown! It's to extreme. About 20 other teams need to have their coaches suspended as well then. Soft League, don't hit the QB, no helmet to helmet, late hits, hands off league!! This isn't football! They get payed millions to play this game, they know the risk. I don't pay to see the refs dictate a game because Brady got hit 5 seconds after a release.. sucks! Lets be real, if he didn't pin point specific injuries and just said, take Farve out if you can, make him feel it, is that wrong?? Thats why you play D!! If you don't hit to knock out the ball or leave that memory in the back of their head, how do you hit?????!!

I agree Aaron!! I think he has changed the game(Goodell) in the worst way. Its funny, Wen Paul Tagilbue (sorry if I spelled it wrong) was the Commissioner, he was weak but let football be football, but now Goodell is pretty tough but he makes the game softer!!! I don't want anybody to be injured but I want my team (Da Bears) to hurt the opponent!!!! I keep saying don't be surprised when they start making the QB's wear flags!!!!!

I think it was deserved. Not because of the " bounty program" itself a coach should be able to tell his defense to go hard and attack anyone who steps on the field and use whatever terminology he has to use to spark a fire under them. i dont think a coach saying '' get in there and knock jay cultlers block off , He's killing us " a bounty ! its game talk , even before the game . every team has players you may want to focus on . But when you take a "Warning" handed down from the commish's office and make him look like a joke, he cant afford that he'll loose control and respect. So his example is the saints and to let everyone else know " Heed my warnings"

I feel you 2 cents, I think the fact that he warned Payton and got ignored would have left a lingering affect on the NFL. I guess Payton had no choice. Yet he still is making the league into a patti cake league!!!!

Im going to start by saying that the right decisión was made regarding the punishments handed down to the Saints & Staff! Did Goodell do it cause he cares for his players? No. Now im not saying he doesn't but he did this in order to fight the current lawsuits againest the NFL. This situation is what PR's dream about, and all Goodell would need to do is stick his chest out, deepen his voice, punish the bad guys and now he is dun-dun-da-dun Superman!! Roger Goodell is a ten year old bully who beats up all the five year olds on the play ground. He is a insecure, selfish, too much power having, slave driver. Too sum things up the right punishment was giving out, the motives behind it were none other than impure and selfish.!.
