Top 5 Stress Busters For Moms
Local author, mom and Well-Being Specialist, Melissa Grill-Petersen, DC, shares some of her stress relieving tips and tricks for moms from her upcoming book, BE authentically YOU-a users guide to self-coaching and personal transformation.
The pressure to perform as a "Super Mom" has taken its toll on today’s busy moms. While cracking through the glass ceiling, it seems that we forgot to give ourselves a break. Instead of sitting down and taking the time to pull the glass out of our hair, we attempt to do this while sitting in the carpool lane while wrapping up a business call.
So, what’s a girl to do? Give yourself permission to take a nap, eat healthier and work exercise into your schedule, says Melissa Grill-Petersen, DC, mom, Author and Well-being Specialist. “Stress is the bad emotional state that causes everything from hormone imbalance and weight gain to heart disease and depression,” explains Petersen.
While I wouldn’t argue any of those points, it’s hard to know where to start when you’re swimming in a sea of to-do and must-do lists. Petersen literally takes a few pages from her upcoming book, BE authentically YOU-a users guide to self-coaching and personal transformation, and shares her top stress-busting tips. Don’t worry, you will still have time to make that pot roast-most of these can be done in just one to three minutes.
Tip 1 Stop in the Name of Stress: Ask yourself, if you could be any other way than stressed at the moment, what would you rather be? Petersen explains that by stopping the mental cycle to immediately react negatively, that the momentary shift will align you with your natural resource state and allow you to better respond to a stressful situation.
Tip 2 You Are What You Eat: Your daily diet has much to do with not just your physical well-being, but your mental well-being as well. Help your body to stop stress in it’s tracks by eating a diet filled with fresh fruits, veggies and the building blocks of tissue, proteins. Your best bet to keeping nutrition simple, is to eat three meals a day or every four hours. Make sure your plate is filled with three servings (the size of your fist) of colorful, health filled food to include a protein, starchy carbohydrates and fiberous carbohydrates.
Tip 3 Give Thanks: Positive psychology studies show that taking five minutes every day to notice what is good in your life and to be thankful for it reduces stress, increases optimism and enhances overall health and well-being.
Tip 4 You Don’t Snooze, You Lose: The National Sleep Foundation tells us that taking a 15-minute nap every day can increase mood, energy, performance, lower stress, improve brain function and enhance health. Petersen advises moms to give themselves permission to get comfy, close their eyes and nap for a healthier and happier self.
Tip 5 Be Strong: Weight resistance exercise two to three times a week for as little as 20 minutes has been shown to decrease stress, improve hormonal balance and slow down the aging process. Now that is what I call motivation to lift some weights. No weights? Try picking up your child instead. Be sure to always lift with your legs and not your back.
