We recycle newspaper and all cardboard products including paper towel and toilet tissue rollers, any boxes brought from the grocery/drug store such as toothpaste, cereal etc. These are taken weekly to the recycle bin. All tin/aluminum cans by washing and placing in covered trash cans which have a designated area and are recycled monthly. This has reduced our garbage pick-up in half. We do not use our garbage service recycle program as they haul their refuse out of the county to someone's landfill. Any excess materials are carried to our landfill for proper disposal. Many are unaware that the recycle program began at the Douglas County Landfill in the late 70's. This is not something new but does require constant reminders, such as how many years paper, plastic, styrofoam and glass take to degenerate in our landfills. Proper disposal of batteries, oil products, roofing. tires and even large appliances should also be included in the recycle process education which should begin with grammar school children!

We take all of our glass, aluminium, plastic and cardboard to the Douglas County landfill recycling center. It's free and saves on landfill space. We also recycle all plastic bags and styrofoam at Publix. This all takes a little extra time but we feel it is worth it.
