Republicans will retain a State House seat even after the party’s incumbent dropped out of his race to pursue another elected office.

Based on unofficial results, voters have tapped Republican candidate Micah Gravley to serve as the next representative of District 67, which includes a southeastern portion of Paulding County.

As of 10 p.m., overall results showed that Gravley had taken 13,783 votes, or 67.6 percent, to Democrat Leigh Mcmutry’s 6,613 votes, or 32.4 percent.

Gravley had only been in the race a few weeks. Incumbent Bill Hembree had originally been the Republican candidate and had advanced past the July 31 primary after running unopposed, but the candidate resigned to pursue the GOP nomination for the District 30 State Senate seat. Gravley soon thereafter was named by GOP leaders to be the party's candidate in the House race.
