Speak Out: Should Veterans Day Be a School Holiday?

Public schools will be one of the few government services in operation today. Tell us what you think about that.

Banks are closed today. So are post offices. But schools will still be in session.

Veterans Day was Sunday, and because the holiday fell on the weekend, many entities will observe the holiday today, including the federal government, which will be giving many of its employees the day off, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Today is also a holiday for the state of Georgia, one of the 12 holidays state employees will observe this year.

While most other government-related offices will be closed for the day, students this morning will be heading to classes in the Cobb, Douglas, and Paulding county school systems.

Should schools be closed for Veterans Day? Tell us in the poll below.

We want to hear from you. Let us know whether you think school facilities should be closed like other government offices, or whether schools should stay open. If the latter, tell us if and how school districts should address the holiday during class time.

Share what’s on your mind with us, and then return here to see what your neighbors in Paulding, Douglas and Cobb have said.

Many schools were just closed last week for the elections since for some reason, cities like to use them for voting when there are plenty of churches, community buildings, etc. that could be used. Then at Thanksgiving, the schools are closed for another week so the kids have plenty & perhaps too much time off in Nov. If Veteran's Day were made a school holiday then one of the already allocated days off should be given up as a trade off. Our children need more school days, not less.

I don't believe schools should have veterans day off. Most schools and those in academia rail against the military and hold us in disdain so why should they be rewarded with a day off in recognition of the very group they despise.

I think in this day and age it is an abomination to not NATIONALLY recognize and honor the veterans that have afforded you the opportunity to send your child to school, and teach your children about the sacrifice they made to ensure this countries existence.

Veterans Day should especially be honored by our youth. They need to be aware of what the day recognizes and grow knowing we care. There are other "holidays" that could be dropped, if necessary, but we must let our youth know our feelings.

While I agree with the sentiment, the kids DO get Memorial Day off.

Also, an organized history lesson to explain veterans day is more of an honor than a day home playing.

@Byron...
We also get off Good Friday, Independence day, Labor Day, Martin Luther Kings Day, Christmas, etc. Not debating days off here, but as a vet myself, I hold the military very near and dear, and take any moment I can to honor the sacrifice of our military.

Memorial day is for honoring the servicemen who died on duty while defending our country and our freedoms..

Veterans Day is for honoring ALL servicemen for their sacrifice - in life or in death, in wartime or during peace.

If it weren't for veterans, there would be no democracy today. If your kids went to school at all, it would be to learn to speak GERMAN!

I feel veterans day should be for veterans only (I don't want to sound selfish) I served seven years in the Army and I'm very proud of it although I didn't experience any war time I volunteered and could have I don't ask for any special privileges and certainly don't consider myself a hero I'm just a regular guy who served time and one day off would be very much appriciated schools should not be closed but instead should implement a curriculum to teach students what veterans day is ( or should be ) all about, Banks shouldn't be closed unless by chance all employees are veterans (not Likely)

Scott Sweeney, the Chair of the Cobb Board of Ed recently suggested including Veterans Day as a school holiday.

Banks opposed the idea.

Schools have a choice to have school or take the day off.

In Cobb County many of our schools have a Veterans Day observance where the students learn the meaning of Veterans Day and have the opportunity to see and honor living veterans. Shallowford Falls E.S., has an annual Veterans Day event in the morning where all of the students get to participate as well has Rocky Mount. This year Shallowford Falls had a night event for Veterans at Simpson Middle School. Many grandparents of Shallowford Falls students who are veterans were present and the opportunity was given for those in attendance to honor all the veterans.

This morning, Pope H.S., had their first Veterans Day event to honor staff members who were veterans. The keynote speaker was 91-year-old Mr. Durward Swanson, a Pearl Harbor survivor. I was encouraged to see such a large number of students who came up to Mr. Swanson to shake his hand and to say “thank you”.

One elementary school had each student write about what Veterans Day meant to him or her. Each letter was tape on the hall wall. Can you imagine how many hundreds of letters that students wrote that decorated the halls?

I want students to know why we honor veterans on Veterans Day and have an opportunity to participate in a Veterans Day program so that they will have a clear understanding of the sacrifice many men and women have made for our country. I do not want Veterans day to become just another day out of school and lose its meaning.
