Doc Stovall Dies in Crash

Lithia Springs resident and former CAC board member Doc Stovall died in the early-morning traffic accident that involved two vehicles on Felton Road at Tennessee Street in Cartersville Monday morning.

Authorities say the Wednesday morning was Lithia Springs resident and former board member and Cowboy Poet performer Doc Stovall. He was in his mid 70s, according to Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton.

say they responded to the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of North Tennessee Street and Felton Road about 6:45 a.m. Despite treatment attempts by emergency medical crews, Stovall, the driver of a black truck, passed away at the scene.

While he was on the Board his main focus was organizing two large, local events the Cowboys Poets Gathering and Pioneer Days, Laura Lieberman said, director of the council.

"He got talent to come here from all over the county," she said. "When he was hired by the Booth Museum he told me it was the first time he had ever been happy to go to work in his life.

"He was also great about reaching out to the youth and our schools," Lieberman said. "He was a huge resource to the community. He'll be missed. He was a great, local character. I learned a lot from him and I'll miss him a lot."

"A sad day at Booth Museum as we mourn the loss of our good friend Doc Stovall," the museum's Facebook page says. "Please keep Doc's family in your thoughts and prayers. He will be greatly missed by the entire Booth family."

A well known Western singer and cowboy poet honored in 2002 as Georgia’s Official Cowboy Balladeer and in 2004 as the first cowboy singer inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame, Stovall led discussions, gave presentations and performed at the museum, according to the Booth's website.

Police are continuing to investigate the collision, and have not released details.
