County Celebrates Vietnam Veterans Day Observance

Patriotism and appreciation were on full display Thursday at the Douglas County Courthouse as residents came out to honor Vietnam Veterans.

Patriotism and appreciation were on full display Thursday at the Douglas County Courthouse as residents came out to honor Vietnam Veterans.

In the attached video, the Lithia Springs High School Band kicks off the festivities; Commission Chairman Tom Worthan gives his opening remarks; the Chapel Hill High School Navy JROTC presents the Colors; and the Lithia Springs High School Chorus performs.

During Thursday's celebrations, Rev. Scott Hughes, an assistant pastor of Douglasville's First United Methodist Church, remembered that more than eight and a half million American soldiers served in the military from 1964-1973 in the Southeast Asia theatre of operations.

"Over 300,000 were wounded," he said. "Over 58,000 were killed in action, 1,584 were Georgians and 12 were from Douglas County"
